A rare sunny Saturday morning in August saw a crowd gathering to launch a new team at the Community Op Shop in Mountain Gate.
The ceremony commenced with Knox Council’s First Nations Lead, Adrian Greenwood, acknowledging the traditional owners of the land and paying respects to elders, past, present and emerging. Steve Barrington CEO of Foothills Food Care (FCC) thanked all who attended and outlined the history.
Mountain Gate Community Opportunity Shop has been operating for over 40 years at this site, serving the local community through the sale of preloved items and forwarding donations to many local organisations.
Now FCC, while continuing the op shop service, will be able to channel much needed funds into their programs and services including their Free Meals Programs: Monday Upwey Community Meal, Wednesday Ferntree Gully Community Meal, the delivered Community Casseroles, and the Women’s DV Peer Support Program.
Federal member for Aston, Alan Tudge, commented: ‘As many of you may have already seen, the Mountain Gate Community Op Shop in Ferntree Gully is now open! Foothills Community Care (FCC), have recently taken over the Op Shop which has been serving our community for over 40 years.
‘I was pleased to help secure $15,000 of federal funds to upgrade the shop, re-brand, and get it launched again. This is not just about an op-shop – it becomes a hub for local connections and volunteering. All the proceeds go back to supporting the work of FCC who provide meals to those in need and a Women’s domestic violence Peer Support program. Thanks to you Steve, and the team, for the wonderful work you continue to do for our Knox community.’
