Puffing Billy Running Festival 2024

The Puffing Billy Running Festival once again brought the Dandenong Ranges to life on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October with the unmistakable sounds of runners pounding the tracks, Puffing Billy chugging along, and enthusiastic cheers from the spectators.

The much-anticipated festival welcomed over 3400 participants this year, solidifying its place as an annual tradition.

Runners of all ages and skill levels competed across a range of scenic courses, from the 1.2km Kids Dash to the challenging 21.1km half marathon. The festival offered something for everyone โ€“ whether it was family fun, a test of endurance, or a once-in-a-lifetime chance to race against the iconic Puffing Billy train.

1.2km Kids Dash

Saturday kicked off with excitement as young runners took on the 1.2km Kids Dash around the picturesque Emerald Lake Park, showcasing both their speed and determination.

Nine-year-old April Hayward sped through and set a new record for the female category with her remarkable 4 minute, 41 second finish, while nine-year old Ace Dean claimed victory in the male category with a swift time of 4 minutes, 47 seconds. Both Ace and April celebrated as the new champions of 2024!

5km Family Fun Run

The 5km Family Fun Run followed, inviting participants to enjoy the stunning Dandenong Ranges while racing through nature alongside family and friends.

16 year old Holly Makaay, the reigning female winner, returned to defend her title, finishing with an impressive 20 minutes, 46 seconds โ€“ beating her 2023 time by nearly a full minute. 20 year old Jackson Addicott led the pack to become the first male winner with a record time of 18 minutes and 10 seconds. Sunday Marathons

Sunday brought the spotlight to the two main events; the 13.5km โ€˜Classicโ€™, and the 21.1km Half Marathon.

The 13.5km course, a favourite for both seasoned runners and newcomers, saw Michael Kernahan from Cheltenham take the win with a swift time of 47 minutes and 27 seconds. On the womenโ€™s side, Sarah Klein from Cockatoo stormed the finish line in 49 minutes and 18 seconds, making it her second consecutive win in the โ€˜Classicโ€™.

Once again, despite a valiant effort, Puffing Billy was no match for the speed of runners, clocking a finishing time of 1 hour, 8 minutes, 45 seconds.

Half Marathon

The Half Marathon, now in its second year, offered the ultimate challenge for long-distance runners. Daniel Ebbott from Hampton emerged as the new champion, crossing the finish line in 1 hour, 17 minutes, and 48 seconds.

In a thrilling display of speed and endurance, Ilona Sankey of Kew East took the womenโ€™s title with an impressive time of 1 hour, 29 minutes and 50 seconds.

Beyond the competition, the event fostered a strong sense of community spirit, with many spectators lining the routes to cheer on the runners, and more than 100 volunteers giving their time to ensure the eventโ€™s smooth operation.

โ€˜Weโ€™re thrilled to see so many runners, families and supporters return this year to make the Puffing Billy Running Festival a success,โ€™ said Stefanie Straub, Acting CEO of Puffing Billy Railway. โ€˜This event not only celebrates fitness and fun but also raises important funds for the preservation of Puffing Billy, ensuring its continued role in heritage railway history and the local community.โ€™

Proceeds from the festival will directly support ongoing projects at Puffing Billy Railway, including the refurbishment of the historic Menzies Creek Museum and enhancements along the rail corridor.
