SUMMARY:Knox Remembrance Day Service
DESCRIPTION:The Knox Remembrance Day committee would like to invite you to the Remembrance Day service at the Knox War Memorial at the Tim Neville Arboretum. The ceremony starts at 10:45am. \nRemembrance Day\, which was originally known as Armistice Day\, commemorated the end of hostilities in World War One\, with the signing of the armistice on November 11\, 1918 – the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Hostilities brought about the mobilisation of over 70 million people and left between nine and 13 million people dead\, many with no known grave. \nOn the first anniversary of the armistice in 1919\, one minute’s silence was instituted as part of the main commemorative ceremony. After the end of World War Two in 1945\, the Australian and British governments changed the name to ‘Remembrance Day’ as an\nappropriate title for a day which would commemorate all war dead and injured. \nThe ceremony in Knox is unique in that it is almost entirely conducted by students from local primary and secondary schools. These students will participate with the readings\, wreath laying\, raising and lowering of the flags\, ably supported by a school choir. The involvement of the younger generation demonstrates an enthusiasm and empathy in remembering this special day. \nEveryone is welcome to attend where provision will be made for the public to lay a poppy in remembrance.

DESCRIPTION:Now in its third year\, Puffing Billy’s Train of Lights has become a school holiday tradition\, enchanting locals and visitors as it turns the Dandenong Ranges into a mesmerising light show. \nTickets are sold out for this year\, but why not enjoy the magic and wave to the Train of Lights as it goes by? \nDeparting at 6 pm daily from 28th June to 21st July\, the train will embark on a return 2.5-hour journey from Lakeside Station to Gembrook. As dusk falls and the chilly winter air sets in\, the train will come to life with a dazzling display of moving lights\, colours\, and immersive patterns as the train winds its way along the historic narrow-gauge track. \nFor more information\, head to the Puffing Billy website.

DESCRIPTION:Have you been left with toys\, games and books in good condition that your children have grown out of\, and are looking for some new ones? \nEmpty those toy boxes and bookshelves and bring them down to Ferntree Gully Library to swap with others. Donations will be accepted from Monday 5th August\, or just bring them with you on the day. Any leftover goods will be donated to charity. \nPlease note that only books and toys in good condition can be accepted for the swap. We cannot accept baby/children’s clothing or furniture donations.

DESCRIPTION:You are welcome to join the annual commemorative service for Kokoda Day\, to honour the brave young boys/men of the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion who fought so gallantly and paid the ultimate price so that we could enjoy a free Australia. \nThis service will be filmed by the Australian War Memorial (AWM) and will be screened at the new southern entrance of the AWM in Canberra to welcome visitors. \nDate of service coincides with the retaking of the Kokoda Village by 39th.
