SUMMARY:Clean Up Australia Day
DESCRIPTION:Clean Up Australia Day is on Sunday 5th March\, with a number of clean-up initiatives taking place in our local reserves (Koolunga Reserve\, being one example). \nCome along and do your bit to look after our natural reserves. \nPip Kiernan\, Chair of Clean Up Australia says ‘Our environment is facing pressure unlike ever before. As all Australians know\, over the past two years\, we’ve seen severe bushfires\, cyclones and floods\, and increased pressures on our biodiversity and an ever-growing volume of waste which leaks into our natural and marine environment. \n‘Australians tell us every day that they are concerned about the world we live in but often feel frustrated and unsure how to make a positive impact. Clean Up Australia Day is a great opportunity to work together and take practical action. Together we can all make a real difference\,’ Pip continued. \n‘Signing up now means you’re making a pledge to improve and protect Australia’s environment. Whether you are 9 or 90\, participating in a Clean Up Australia event changes the way you think about your everyday habits and the practical changes each of us can make. Everyone who gets involved tells us how rewarding the day is and how it has made a lasting positive impact\,’ Pip said.

This festival\, started in 2008\, celebrates the survival of Indigenous people\, culture and heritage. \nThis year’s festival will be a scaled back festival\, small in size\, but bigger in heart and impact. They make a plea\nto keep Belgrave Survival Day running: ‘We need you. Please step up as a volunteer or join the Survival Day committee. Have your say. Help us to work together with the Kulin Nation to keep this Festival going.’ \nFor more information see the Belgrave Survival Day Facebook site.

SUMMARY:Knox Remembrance Day Service
DESCRIPTION:The Knox Remembrance Day committee would like to invite you to the Remembrance Day service at the Knox War Memorial at the Tim Neville Arboretum. The ceremony starts at 10:45am. \nRemembrance Day\, which was originally known as Armistice Day\, commemorated the end of hostilities in World War One\, with the signing of the armistice on November 11\, 1918 – the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Hostilities brought about the mobilisation of over 70 million people and left between nine and 13 million people dead\, many with no known grave. \nOn the first anniversary of the armistice in 1919\, one minute’s silence was instituted as part of the main commemorative ceremony. After the end of World War Two in 1945\, the Australian and British governments changed the name to ‘Remembrance Day’ as an\nappropriate title for a day which would commemorate all war dead and injured. \nThe ceremony in Knox is unique in that it is almost entirely conducted by students from local primary and secondary schools. These students will participate with the readings\, wreath laying\, raising and lowering of the flags\, ably supported by a school choir. The involvement of the younger generation demonstrates an enthusiasm and empathy in remembering this special day. \nEveryone is welcome to attend where provision will be made for the public to lay a poppy in remembrance.
